Welcome to the CVCDCS Board of directors
The CVCDCS was incorporated as a Non-Profit Society in 1970. All parents that register their children in one of our centers are members of the society. Our volunteer parent-run board makes the decisions for our Society following our own constitution and bylaws, the Societies Act, and working directly with our Unionized ECE employees. We are proud and delighted that our society has provided quality childcare in the Comox Valley for over 50 years.
Purpose of a board
The major and primary purpose of any Board is to govern. Regardless of whether a Board has staff to manage and operate a Society or uses volunteers to get the work done, the Board’s purpose is still only to govern. Its purpose is not to manage, micromanage, administer, or run a Society
Governing is made up of the following six key elements:
- Guidance/direction;
- Standards of organizational conduct;
- Oversight of all organizational performance;
- Protecting the best interests of the Society;
- Ensuring the financial sustainability of the Society; and
- Knowledge of stakeholder expectations, needs, concerns, interests and wants.
Board’s responsibilities & authorities
The Board operates by delegating to management certain of its authorities, including spending authorizations, and by reserving certain powers to itself.
The Board retains the responsibility for managing its own affairs including:
- Selecting the Chair or Co-Chairs and Secretary;
- Recruiting, nominating and electing candidates to the Board;
- Providing guidance to the Nominating Committee regarding the criteria they must consider in making their recommendations to the Board;
- Constituting Committees of the Board;
- Developing and instituting Board policy;
- Evaluating Board and Director performance; and
- Hiring and terminating the employment of an Executive Director.
